As structural engineers, we determine the layout and sizing of the framing which supports buildings, bridges, and other structures. For all structures it is advisable to have a structural engineer involved in the design. Structural engineering is usually mandated by the permitting agency for structures other than residential. Many residential projects, by virtue of irregular plans, size, extensive glazing, or unusual details will need engineering. We perform calculations based on industry standard requirements for self-weight, live, snow, wind, and seismic loads. We also proportion retaining wall systems for soil load recommendations provided by geotechnical engineers.
Parkin Engineering specializes in bridge form travelers for cast-in-place segmental bridges. These are complex structures loaded to full design loads, with moving parts and hydraulic equipment. We have designed entirely new form traveler systems, and we have provided peer review services for travelers and gantries designed by others. In many cases, we have "followed" several sets of travelers from bridge project to bridge project, calculating and documenting the necessary modifications, and producing proof calculations for permit review.
Parkin Engineering prepares structural engineering calculations for the design of hydraulic structures intended for construction in rivers, lakes, ponds, fishways, and similar water conveyance channels. Parkin has worked with Smith-Root to design electrical fish barrier since the early 1990s. Typical services include structural steel design and drawings, foundation design, piling and shoring, shop drawing review, and construction inspection.
